Originally rooted in the Vedas - the sacred scriptures of Hinduism - this music evolved significantly over the centuries.
During the time of the Delhi Sultanate and later Mughal Empire, Indian music underwent a significant transformation. The era saw the infusion of Sufi mysticism and the influence of great Persian and Central Asian artists like Amir Khusrao. This period also marked the integration of Persian poetry into Indian music, enriching its texture and depth. These changes laid the groundwork for the development of Hindustani classical music, which would later cross borders into Afghanistan.
A Musical Bridge to Afghanistan
Qasim Afghan (1878-1957)
The true "bridge" in our musical journey begins with an interesting twist of fate.
At the end of the 19th century, the father of Qasim Afghan, a renowned musician, was invited from Kashmir to perform at the Royal Court in Afghanistan. His performances were so impressive that he was asked to stay, marking the start of a significant cultural exchange. He later married an Afghan woman, and in this vibrant, culturally rich environment, his son Qasim was born.
Qasim grew up to master Hindustani classical music, a testament to his father's influence and his own innate talent. In recognition of his mastery and his contributions to Afghan music, he was bestowed the title "Afghan," transforming him into Qasim Afghan. This name symbolized not just his heritage but also his pivotal role in introducing and mastering Hindustani classical music in Afghanistan.
He became the first Afghan musician to achieve this feat, creating a lasting legacy that continues to influence Afghan music to this day.
