Welcome to Dera Studio!
We're thrilled to finally embark on this musical journey with you all. It's been a long time coming, and we're excited to share our passion for the rich and diverse musical traditions of Afghanistan and its neighboring regions.
Dera Studio was conceived just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and like many others, we faced unforeseen challenges. But the flame of our commitment never wavered. We knew that the beauty of our music was a treasure worth preserving and celebrating. So, we waited patiently for the world to heal.
In 2022, we decided it was time to bring our vision to life. The pandemic had brought to light the importance of culture and connection, and we felt a renewed sense of purpose. Our team, driven by a deep love for these musical traditions, set out to make Dera Studio a reality.
We took our first steps with our inaugural event in August 2023, featuring the talented Shamali Afghan. Despite limited resources, we couldn't have asked for a better start. The energy, the music, and the unity we experienced during those performances were truly heartwarming. It was a glimpse of what Dera Studio could bring to our community.
Yet, as we celebrate these early successes, we are mindful of the stark reality facing musicians in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban seized power in 2021, music has been forbidden, and the vibrant cultural tapestry of a 5000-year-old tradition is at risk of fading away. Our mission at Dera Studio is not only to celebrate these traditions but also to preserve and share them.
In our next blog post, we'll take a historical dive into the world of Indian classical music and its journey to Afghanistan. We'll explore the families and communities that have nurtured this heritage, keeping it alive throughout the ages.
